In an order to create participative, transparent and responsive government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the much ambitious 'Digital India' programme on Wednesday, July 1, at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in the national capital. Top industrialists like RIL Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani, Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry, Wipro Chairman Azim Premji and many others, were among the business honchos who shared their ideas of taking digital revolution to the masses.What is Digital India? With the launch of Digital India programmer, the government is taking a big step forward to transform the country into a digitally empowered knowledge economy. PM is expected to unveil various schemes worth over Rs 1 lakh crore like Digital Locker, e-education, e-health, e-sign and national scholarship portal. BharathNet in 11 states and Next Generation Network (NGN), are also a part of Digital India campaign. The programme includes projects that aim to ensure that government services are available to citizens electronically and people get benefit of the latest information and communication technology. The Ministry of Communications and IT is the nodal agency to implement the programme.

Digital India will be vast in scale, and ambitious in its aims in true Modi style. India's top businessmen committed Rs 4.5 lakh crore to build various parts of the program, expected to generate 18 lakh jobs. Modi hopes to reduce corruption in government services by making most of that available online.
The source said with the launch of this programme, the government is taking a big step forward to transform the country into a digitally empowered nation.
"E-Governance is going to change into M-Governance," he said. "M is not Modi Governance. It is mobile governance," Modi said at the launch Wednesday.

PM Modi will launch the Digital India Week on Wednesday evening urging people to gain knowledge and to empower themselves through the Digital India Programme.
The vision of Digital India programme also aims at inclusive growth in areas of electronic services, products, manufacturing and job opportunities etc. The vision of Digital India is centred on three key areas -
(i) Digital Infrastructure as a utility to every citizen
(ii) Governance & services on demand
(iii) Digital Empowerment of citizens
The Digital India programme aims to provide broadband highways, universal access to mobile connectivity, public internet access programme, e-governance: Reforming government through technology, Kranti - Electronic delivery of services, Information for all, Electronics manufacturing: Target net zero imports, IT for jobs and early harvest programmes.
In line with these objectives, the government has launched some initiatives.
SCOPE OF DIGITAL INDIA
The overall scope of this programme is:
(i) to prepare India for a knowledge future.
(ii) on being transformative that is to realize IT (Indian Talent) + IT (Information Technology) = IT (India Tomorrow)
(iii) making technology central to enabling change.
(iv) on being an Umbrella Programme – covering many departments.
· The programme weaves together a large number of ideas and thoughts into a single, comprehensive vision, so that each of them is seen as part of a larger goal. Each individual element stands on its own, but is also part of the larger picture.
· The weaving together makes the Mission transformative in totality.
(v) The Digital India Programme will pull together many existing schemes which would be restructured and re-focused and implemented in a synchronized manner. The common branding of the programmes as Digital India, highlights their transformative impact.
Digital India aims to provide the much needed thrust to the nine pillars of growth areas, namely
1. Broadband Highways,
2. Universal Access to Mobile Connectivity,
3. Public Internet Access Programme,
4. e-Governance: Reforming Government through Technology,
5. e-Kranti - Electronic Delivery of Services,
6. Information for All,
7. Electronics Manufacturing,
8. IT for Jobs
9. Early Harvest Programmes.
